Climate

Temperatures, degree days, design temperatures, thermal comfort, humidity and rainfall from the nearest weather station.

The weather data

Projected finds the nearest weather station to your site and loads its typical meteorological year (TMY): 8,760 hours of weather that represent a normal year at that station, in the standard EPW format used by building simulation tools.

The bottom of the panel shows the weather file and the station’s distance from the site. The same data feeds the Solar & Daylight and Wind panels, the Climate section of PDF reports and the energy model of the Carbon Analysis.

The Climate panel: hourly carpet plot, monthly temperatures and degree days.

Temperature

  • Hourly Carpet Plot: every hour of the year, day by day, coloured by temperature. Read it to see daily cycles and seasons at a glance.
  • Monthly Min / Mean / Max: the monthly temperature range and mean.
  • Monthly Degree Days (base 18 °C): heating and cooling degree days each month.

Key figures:

FigureWhat it means
Heating Degree DaysHow much, and for how long, the outdoor temperature stays below 18 °C over the year. A measure of heating demand.
Cooling Degree DaysThe same above 18 °C. A measure of cooling demand.
Avg Diurnal RangeThe average difference between the day’s warmest and coldest hour
Frost DaysDays with a minimum below 0 °C
Hot DaysDays with a maximum above 30 °C

Design temperatures

Design temperatures are the extreme conditions used to size heating and cooling systems (ASHRAE Fundamentals):

  • Heating 99.6 % and Heating 99 %: temperatures the site is colder than for only 0.4 % or 1 % of the year’s hours.
  • Cooling 0.4 % and Cooling 1 %: temperatures exceeded for only 0.4 % or 1 % of the hours.

Thermal comfort

A breakdown of the year’s hours:

  • Comfortable: 20–26 °C with relative humidity below 80 %.
  • Too Cold: below 20 °C.
  • Too Hot: above 26 °C.
  • Humid: 20–26 °C but above 80 % relative humidity.

This simplified comfort zone follows the principles of ASHRAE Standard 55. Use it to judge how much a building can rely on natural ventilation and passive design.

Relative humidity and precipitation

  • Relative Humidity: the monthly mean.
  • Precipitation: monthly rainfall and the annual total, when the weather file includes it.
